American Poet is an album of an early solo concert by Lou Reed, recorded live at the Hempstead Theatre, New York, on Boxing Day 1972 during the Transformer tour. The backing band are the Tots. It features material from the Velvet Underground's first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, and Reed's first two 1972 solo albums, debut Lou Reed and Transformer. The version of "Berlin" is from that debut album. American Poet was released in 2001. It had previously been released as a bootleg recording.

Rolling Stone magazine voted Reed's 1989 New York album the 19th best of the 1980s. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time included two albums by Reed as a solo artist: Transformer and Berlin. It features material from that album, the Velvet Underground, and his 1972 solo debut Lou Reed. The album's cover photo is by Mick Rock, evidently from the same shoot that yielded the Transformer cover.

Great recording although: Oh my goodniz - how low and cheap AND bad can a label get when they can't even spell the musicians names right on the cover??? - PRENITTI GILA - jeez - this is supposed to be PENTI "Whitey" GLAN on the drums - and John Prakish is s'posed to be PRAKASH JOHN on bass, who used to play bass on BUSH (1970) with Roy Kenner, Penti and Domenic Troiano - how do those Cult Legend-people come up with names such as this, I mean where do they get that misinformation from?? - prenitti gila...jeez... Btw: Alice Cooper took this band along for his Nightmare tour in 1975. Prakash, Hunter, Wagner and Penti stayed on for Alice's ride until around 1978 (From the inside-tour) or maybe even a bit longer...
