The Wall is the eleventh studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd, released 30 November 1979 on Harvest and Columbia Records. A rock opera, its story explores Pink, a jaded rockstar whose eventual self-imposed isolation from society is symbolised by a wall. The record was a commercial success, charting at number one in the US for 15 weeks, and number three in the UK. In 1982, the album was adapted into a feature film of the same name, directed by Alan Parker.

Pink Floyd’s The Wall was the best-selling album of 1980, and consumed the band for much of the early part of the next decade. It also caused irreparable structural damage to the band that eventually led to its collapse. There were some major arguments, but they were on artistic disagreements. The intention behind The Wall was to make the best record we could. Released in November 1979, The Wall stands as Pink Floyd’s grandest statement, presenting them as the major prog rock players of the 80s. That fact was aided by the huge success of the N. single Another Brick In The Wall Part 2, which spent 12 weeks in the UK chart following its release in December 1979 – the first time Floyd had had a taste of the UK singles chart since the Syd Barrett-era See Emily Play reached N. in June 1967.
Pink Floyd were rock's leading technocrats throughout the 70's, masters of the concert spectacle; and "The Wall" shows were the pinnacle of their art. The foursome, plus ancillary musicians and singers, performed the album while a huge makeshift wall was erected before them at the front of the stage. There were giant inflatables, back-screened films and all manner of technical wizardry, culminating at the end of the show with the just- completed structure crashing down, to the sound of "Outside The Wall". What happened if the roadies lagged behind in building a section of the wall on stage? DG: We created a piece, which is on the new album but wasn't on the original, between "Another Brick III" and "Goodbye Cruel World", for exactly that purpose. NM: There was one hitch on the first night in . At the beginning, there's an explosion. It ignited a curtain at the top of the auditorium.
Pink Floyd – The Wall is a 1982 British surrealist musical drama film directed by Alan Parker with animated segments by political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, and is based on the 1979 Pink Floyd album of the same name.
The story revolves around the fictional Pink Floyd's isolation behind a psychological wall. The wall grows as various parts of his life spin out of control, and he grows incapable of dealing with his neuroses. The album opens by welcoming the unwitting listener to Floyd's show ("In the Flesh?"), then turns back to childhood memories of his father's death in World War II ("Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 1"), his mother's over protectiveness ("Mother"), and his fascination with and fear of sex ("Young Lust")
