I Love Rock 'n Roll is the second studio album by Joan Jett and the first with her backing band The Blackhearts. Soon after the first recording sessions at Soundworks Studios, original Blackheart guitarist Eric Ambel was replaced by Ricky Byrd. It is Jett's most commercially successful album to date with over 10 million copies sold, largely due to the success of the title track, which was released as a single soon after the album was released.
About Rock And Roll Thugs. This song is about the struggle of an artist trying to survive when nobody really understands or agrees with their passion. There is always a way to retrieve what has been lost though, as the artist finds, whenever somebody tries to get rid of the stuff the artist cares about, she always finds a way to get it back or rebel in her own way. Although the chaotic sessions that spawned this album have passed into rock & roll legend and the recording's very genesis (as an out-of-court settlement between John Lennon and an aggrieved publisher) has often caused it to be slighted by many of the singer's biographers, Rock 'n' Roll, in fact, stands as a peak in his post-Imagine catalog: an album
1950s rock n’ roll movies were my teenage gateway to classic Hollywood. I once took a class entitled History of Rock n Roll in America that was taught by a journalism professor because he really liked classic rock. Another history professor teaches a whole class on the Modern American Musical which I think would be a really fun class, but it hasn’t been offered in the whole time I’ve been here.
On Rock ‘n’ Roll, John Lennon does nothing but interpret old rock. The Beatles didn’t care whether they got the music right so long as they got the feeling. Lennon can recreate the music correctly ( Be-Bop-A-Lula ), but never catches the feeling. In making an album about his past, he has wound up sounding like a man without a past. If I didn’t know better, I would have guessed that this was the work of just another talented rocker who’s stumbled onto a mysterious body of great American music that he truly loves but doesn’t really understand. There was a time when he did.
