And Karajan has no problem with this. He's in his element here, as he knows how to make these symphonies teem with life and drama from beginning to end. But-and this is equally important-he also knows how to keep the works from sounding like a bunch of uncontrolled sentimentality. Unlike Bernstein, Karajan doesn't let the pulse drag which actually makes the music far more memorable. The 1st movement is done with much vitality; the middle climax is tremendously terrifying. He takes the 2nd movement broadly, slower than usual, but it works like a charm as it never once slacks off its melancholic, haunting beauty.
