At the core of the album are its two longest tracks, easily summarizing Hassell's multidisciplinary, multidimensional and multicultural approach to creating a sound world unlike any other, where the mix is as important as the music being played. Abu Gil" takes shape gradually-Freeman's viscerally key yet somehow unobtrusive bass only beginning to push the groove half way through its 13 minutes, with Hassell's harmonized trumpet referencing Duke Ellington's "Caravan" throughout. Otherworldly while, at the same time, affecting on a near-Jungian level of collective unconsciousness, Last night the moon came dropping its clothes in the street is an album that, along with ECM's recent Touchstone Series reissue of Power Spot, clarifies and justifies Hassell's unequivocal importance in the history of contemporary music.

Jon Hassell (born March 22, 1937) is an American trumpet player and composer active since the 1960s. He is best known for developing the musical concept known as "Fourth World," which unifies ideas from minimalism, various world music sources, and his electronic manipulation of the trumpet. Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street (2009). Listening to Pictures (2018).

Hassell's electronically enhanced trumpet playing follows directly in a line from Miles Davis' experiments of the 1970s. It comes off more as "singing" than anything else. He sounds like no one else, but many trumpet players and sound collagists have been deeply influenced by his work. The "bowl of sky" in the poem is referent, too: it reflects the quality of Hassell's musical montages and sonic investigations. This has been true since the very beginning in the 1970s, but became his trademark "sound" while working with Brian Eno as he developed his.

Hassell unveiled the concept on his debut album, Vernal Equinox, in 1978. The name Fourth World came two years later, on Hassell’s first collaboration with Brian Eno, Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Musics. Hassell’s roots go back to the early days of modern minimalism in the US. After studying with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Centre for New Music in Cologne in the mid 1960s, Hassell returned to the US and fell in with Terry Riley and La Monte Young. He played on the first recording of Riley’s In C in 1968, and toured and recorded with Young’s Theatre Of Eternal Music collective.

Throughout the 80s, 90s and 2000s, Hassell continued to expand his sound into ever more lushly abstracted zones with the albums Power Spot, The Surgeon Of The Night Sky Restores Dead Things By The Power Of Sound, Maarifa Street and Last Night The Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes In The Street. More recently, Hassell’s name and the term Fourth World have been popping up with increasing frequency in some of the more forward-thinking quarters of electronic music. The Fourth World attribute has been attached to Don’t DJ, whose kaleidoscopic tracks blur the lines between synths, drum machines and gamelan orchestras. Montreal’s RAMZi has cited Hassell as an influence on her own music, which seems to similarly exist in a distinct space-time of its own.

The album, which takes its title from 13th century Persian poet Rumi, is atmospheric, blending world music influences with electronics and Hassell's unique trumpet style. 4. kHz, 24-bit PCM – ECM Records Studio Masters.

I happened to be checking out some things that I own on discogs and where they are at for prices now. When it was released, I paid 35.00 canadian for it. The prices online for it now are absurd. A warning to all looking or considering getting it. Don't. The pressing is not worth the prices online. TBH, I wouldn't even spend the 35.00 I did in the first place. Stick with the cd or digital.
